Krishi Gram Vikas Kendra  
   

Since 1972, Usha Martin Limited has been working towards the development of Jharkhand, through its Corporate Social Responsibility arm – Krishi Gram Vikas Kendra (KGVK). Registered as a Society under the Societies Registration Act, 1860, the Krishi Gram Vikas Kendra is a NGO with a difference. 

With a mission to ensure progress and prosperity in rural Jharkhand, KGVK’s Total Village Management (TVM) programme has been empowering 700 villages and 1,00,000 households across six districts in the state.

The KGVK Scorecard

Traditional water harvesting structures and lift irrigation schemes of KGVK’s watershed management project have improved the State’s agricultural productivity 3 fold.

With KGVK’s initiatives, more than 1000 farmers have taken up agricultural demonstration in 132 acres of land with improved practices.

More than 8864 families have been benefited by KGVK’s initiative in constructing water conservation structures.

Increase in income has been achieved by 70 % per family/annum due to agriculture and livestock development. 

KGVK has also renovated 46 government sub-centers and 2 government primary Health Centers across the state.

About 100 women groups are participating in KGVK’s community development programmes in education, health, watershed development and bio-diversity conservation.

KGVK has helped in the formation of 469 women-led Self-Help Groups involved in savings and credit, gradually shifting to Micro Enterprise Groups through various income generating activities.

KGVK has set up 6 Model Schools in Ranchi and Jamshedpur, that offer quality primary education to first-time learners, including drop-outs and young adults.

Rewards & recognition

In recognition of its efforts, the Usha Martin Group has been honored with the TERI Corporate Social Responsibility Award in the year 2006. This Award, which recognizes “corporate leadership for good corporate citizenship and sustainable initiatives” acknowledges the success of KGVK’s project for the reduction of Low Birth Weight and Child Mortality. KGVK was also awarded a Certificate of appreciation for work done on HIV/AIDS in 2007.

 
 
Water Resources Conservation Project

Partner: India-Canada Environment Facility (ICEF)

Operational area: Tribal belt of Patratu block, Hazaribagh district

Initiatives:

  • Awareness generation on better agro practices
  • Formation of Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) like Self-Help Groups (SHG), Users’ Groups (UG), etc. for sustaining development and maintaining created   assets
  • Demonstration of alternative sources of income, including horticulture and animal husbandry
  • Constructions for irrigation and water conservation
  • Creation of Eco Clubs to get students involved in conserving the environment
 
 
Integrated Wasteland Development Project (IWDP)

Partner: Ministry of Rural Development, Govt. of India

Operational area: 5,115 hectares across 35 villages of Gamharia block, Seraikela-Kharsawan district

Initiatives:

  • Development of wastelands through construction of check dams, ponds, lift irrigation systems
  • Encouragement of horticulture for alternative livelihood
  • Community capacity building for sustaining the development process
 
 
Drought Prone Area Project (DPAP)

Partner: DRDA, Hazaribagh

Operational area: 2,121 hectares of Patratu block, Hazaribagh district

Initiatives:

  • Creation of 60 SHGs
  • Training on leadership, food processing, cattle-raising, piggery and vermi-compost usage
  • Promotion of micro-enterprise development (MED) activities
  • Introduction of medicinal plant cultivation in collaboration with CAPART
 
 
Tribal Development Project

Partner: Jharkhand Tribal Development Society (JTDS); International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD)

Operational area: 1100 hectares of land, across Rajnagar, Seraikela Kharsawan district

Initiatives:

  • Excavation for water diversion channels, construction and renovation of ponds
  • Encouragement of SHGs for agriculture and animal husbandry
  • Training health volunteers
  • Strengthening of CBOs for participation in interventions
 
 
Saranda Project

Operational area: 5 villages of Saranda, Chaibasa, West Singhbhum district

Initiatives:

  • Initiating participation of farmers in constructing irrigation systems
  • Enhancement of agro-production form 1 crop to 3 crops a year
